Lindsay Ladd is a candid wedding and event photographer based in Baltimore, Maryland, serving couples across DC, MD, and Delaware, specializing in LGBTQ+ weddings and internationally recognized for her work with queer couples.
If you're planning a wedding in Baltimore and you want a venue that makes your guests audibly gasp when they walk in, the George Peabody Library should be at the top of your list. I'm not being dramatic. This place is one of the most stunning event spaces I've ever set foot in, and I've photographed weddings all over the country.
Located in Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood, the Peabody is part of Johns Hopkins University's Libraries system. It was built in 1878 and has been described as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world (seriously, google that phrase and check it out). Six tiers of ornate, cast-iron balconies rise sixty feet above a stunning marble floor, all beneath a soaring glass ceiling that floods the room with natural light. The 300,000 books lining the shelves aren't just decoration. They're used in research and annotations from scholars and students every day.
Guests routinely compare it to Hogwarts and Beauty and the Beast....and they are not wrong.
Is the Peabody LGBTQ+ Inclusive?
Yes, explicitly and enthusiastically. I've photographed a queer lesbian couple's wedding here and the library's FAQ states directly: "We welcome ALL couples and would love to host your event." It's worth saying clearly because not every historic venue has caught up. The Peabody has.
The Space
Your wedding unfolds across two areas. The Reading Room is the main event, where your ceremony and reception take place under those six spectacular floors of cast-iron balconies. The adjoining Exhibition Gallery is where cocktail hour happens, surrounded by rotating curated collections from Johns Hopkins.
A preparation suite is also available for one hour beforehand through the end of your event.
Capacity
Up to 170 guests seated with a dance floor
Up to 150-160 guests if you have a band
Up to 200 guests for a seated or standing reception without a dance floor

A few additional costs to factor in:
Ceremony fee: $1,000 (ceremonies must be booked with a full catered reception)
Liability insurance: Required, typically under $200, easily purchased online
Baby grand piano: Available for a $250 tuning and setup fee
Catering: Exclusive caterers only (see below), typically $140-$180 per person
When Can You Book
Weddings are available Friday through Sunday. Friday and Saturday events start at 5pm or later. All events must end by midnight. Sunday through Thursday availability is limited and requires additional approval.
Your rental includes 4 hours of setup time and 1.5 hours for breakdown.

The Peabody works with a small list of exclusive caterers. You cannot bring your own. Their approved caterers are:

All alcohol must also be procured and served through one of these caterers.
What's Not Allowed
The Peabody has more restrictions than your average venue, and for good reason. They're protecting a 150-year-old historic building and its irreplaceable collections of books and art. The no-go list includes:
Candles or open flames of any kind
Balloons
Confetti
Sparklers
Bubbles
Potted plants
Amplified music in the Exhibition Gallery
Smoking of any kind (including e-cigarettes) anywhere on the property
Animals
A Note on Photography at the Peabody
This is relevant for me personally and worth knowing if you're hiring a photographer. Photography on the main hall staircase is not permitted. Photography on the spiral staircase requires advance approval and an additional fee. And no one is allowed on the upper levels of the library.
But, despite these restrictions, there are plenty of areas for amazing photography, and if you're in the hands of a skilled photographer they'll find unique nooks and crannies for creative photos.
Parking
There is no on-site parking. The Peabody strongly recommends valet service, and many couples use shuttle services (like busses, vans, trolleys, etc). Remember these logistics when planning your budget and timeline.
How to Book the George Peabody Library
You can hold a date for up to seven calendar days with no deposit and no obligation. To officially secure your date, you'll need a signed agreement and a 50% deposit. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the event.
